SPECIAL EVENT | An Evening with Chris Thile: Master of the Mandolin

Four-time Grammy Award-winning mandolinist, singer, songwriter, composer, and MacArthur Genius Grant Fellow, Chris Thile, returns to CMNW for the first time since his sold-out 2017 performance!
Acclaimed as a multifaceted musical talent, The Guardian describes this master mandolinist as “that rare being: an all-round musician,” and NPR has hailed him a “genre-defying musical genius.” Thile is a founding member of the highly influential string bands Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek, and has collaborated with countless luminaries from Yo-Yo Ma to Fiona Apple to Edgar Meyer. For four years, Thile hosted public radio favorite Live from Here with Chris Thile (formerly known as A Prairie Home Companion). Thile’s festival performance will feature selections from his acclaimed solo recordings of Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas—including the second volume out now—alongside his signature post-genre blend of compositional rigor, folksy stagecraft, and improvisational brilliance.
The evening’s program will be curated by the artist and announced from the stage.
We have a special tradition of picnics before concerts at Reed College’s Kaul Auditorium. Reed’s catering service, Bon Appétit, offers food and drink service beginning at 6 PM. Alternately, you can bring your own picnic, but alcoholic beverages must be purchased on site.
Presented in collaboration with Oregon Bach Festival.
Sponsored by Joseph Anthony & Heidi Yorkshire and Martha G. Dibblee.
