Musical Conversation: Celebrating the Journey of World Premieres
With the spirit of week two being a celebration of Artistic Director Emeritus and clarinetist David Shifrin for his 40 years of CMNW leadership, this week’s programming boasts three world premieres played by summer festival favorites, including David! In this Musical Conversation, CMNW Artistic Director Soovin Kim talks with David Shifrin about all the new work he will be a part of this week, and his journey as a musician with these pieces. Soovin speaks with composer David Ludwig about the premiere concerto he wrote to honor David Shifrin, Les Adieux. Flutist Tara Helen O’Connor commissioned Kenji Bunch to write Vesper Flight that she will perform this week. Soovin also talks with composer and librettist Marc Neikrug, along with his director Doug Fitch, about the deeply moving theatrical chamber opera, A Song by Mahler, premiering at the festival.
Our Musical Conversations this summer are a potpourri of recorded personal conversations with some of the week’s composers and performers.
