CMNW's October 5 concert is an evening of original works co-written by Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile. "Bach always works its way into our sets," says Thile (pronounced "TEE-lee"). "And we have the audacity to include our own tunes in a program with the greatest music written!"
Sparks fly when Meyer, 47, and Thile, 27, use almost any tune to unite their instruments in inspired arrangements, then as a springboard to improvise. "We''ve now had long enough to develop this music," Thile says, "and the new CD is an accurate portrayal of what we are as a duo. But every time we play it, it comes out differently. There's so much room for improvisation, and in this concert there'll be a moment or two where we go off the rails and do spontaneous improvisation."
Their duo is unique, and Meyer, who may have worked in more diverse settings with musicians from around the world than any other musician, explains, "There's nobody like Chris. We have a free improvisation on the CD that I couldn't have done with anyone else. We just have that relationship. There's no one else I've worked with who makes that composition-improvisation relationship seem like the same thing." Thile adds, "It's easy because we've played together enough that when one of us makes something up and suggests a direction, the other knows exactly what he's thinking and where to go."
